Prince Charles and Camilla to visit the Republic of Ireland in May

Prince Charles is to visit the Republic of Ireland at the end of next month.

The Prince of Wales will be accompanied by his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cronwall, on the trip which is scheduled for the end of May.

Plans for the visit - the Prince's first to the Republic since 2002 - are already underway with media reports suggesting he will spend time in Co. Sligo.

It it believed that the itinerary may include a visit to the seaside village of Mullaghmore - a favoured holiday destination of the Prince's great-uncle Lord Mountbatton, who was killed there by an IRA bomb in 1979.

St. Columba's Church in Drumcliffe, the burial-place of poet WB Yeats, is also expected to be part of the itinerary, The Irish Times reports.

Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan welcomed news of the 'short visit', confirming that it will include a number of official and private engagements.

“Following the reciprocal State Visits of recent years, this visit to Ireland will represent a further expression of the warm and friendly relations that now exist between us," he said.

"We look forward to their arrival next month, and to a visit programme, which reflects the quality of those relations."
