Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson calls for yes vote in Ireland's marriage referendum

THE leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Ruth Davidson, and her Irish partner, have spoken out in support of legalising same-sex marriage in Ireland.

Ms Davidson, whose partner Jen Wilson is a Wexford native told The Irish Times: “I would never presume to try and tell people in Ireland how to vote. I have a lovely Irish partner. I’m over and back fairly often. Ireland and Scotland are not that different.”

36-year-old Ms Davidson, who has been the party’s leader since 2011, said of Scotland’s recent move to legalise same-sex marriage: “Now that the step’s been taken the sky hasn’t fallen in in Scotland. It’s just as it’s always been. Scotland hasn’t changed.”

Ms Davidson’s partner also came out in support of a “yes” vote on May 22, when Ireland goes to the polls.

“I left Ireland to feel a bit more comfortable in a place that was a bit more inclusive and to be myself,” she said.

“I’ve been completely out here since I came over and in every workplace. I don’t think I would’ve felt comfortable doing that in Ireland, although I think things have changed.”

Ms Wilson has been living in Edinburgh since 2003 and works in marketing.

Ms Davidson also said that if she gets married, the newly re-elected British Prime Minister would get an invite.

“If I do decide to get married I will, of course, invite David and Samantha Cameron,” she said.
