Tragedy as pensioner, 77, killed in freak accident at garage in rural Ireland

AN elderly man has been killed in a tragic accident at a garage in rural Co. Donegal.

The freak workplace incident occurred shortly after 8.30am this morning at a premises in Carrigans on the outskirts of the village of St Johnston.

The pensioner – named as 77-year-old Mervyn Orr – died when he became trapped by machinery while showing mechanics his car at a local garage, reports BreakingNews.ie.

Garda forensic investigators remained at the scene this afternoon and the family of the deceased have been informed of his passing.

In a statement, a Garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Carrigans are investigating the sudden death of a man following a workplace incident at a premises in Carrigans in Donegal.

"A man in his late 70s was fatally injured when his car collided with a parked car and plant machinery on the premises.

"Gardaí and Emergency Services were called to the scene shortly after 8.30am on Monday 17 December 2018 and an examination of the scene is being carried out by Gardaí.

"No other injuries were reported and enquiries are ongoing."

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have dispatched investigators to the scene and the local Coroner has been notified.

Mr Orr is survived by wife, three children and grandchildren.
