Two die in separate collisions on Ireland’s roads, including woman in her 70s

TWO people have died in separate road traffic collisions in Ireland today, including a woman in her 70s.

The woman was driving a car when it was involved in a collision with a lorry on the N55 at Corduff, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan at around 12.30pm.

She was taken to Cavan General Hospital following the crash, where she was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses are asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049-4368800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

The collision followed an earlier single-vehicle collision in Ballyfermot, Co. Dublin at around 6.30am on the Lough Conn Road.

A man in his 30s, who was the only occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

'Tragic incident'

Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, the PSNI have named a man who died after being struck by a car in Co. Down in the early hours of this morning.

Shane Cunningham, 38, was struck by a black Renault Clio as he was on the Warrenpoint Road near Newry.

"Our enquiries are continuing and our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragic incident, which occurred approximately two miles from Newry," said Inspector Phil Robinson.

"The road has re-opened following the collision and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dash-cam footage available to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 445 21/12/19."
