Ulster nurse reduced to tears on 'The One Show' after friends and family pay surprise tribute

A NURSE working on the frontline of Northern Ireland’s fight against coronavirus was left close to tears after friends and family teamed up with The One Show to pay tribute to her incredible efforts.

Mother-of-two Amanda Laing, who is originally from Belfast, works on the Coronavirus ward at Ulster Hospital.

Eager to show his appreciation for her brave efforts, Amanda’s fiancé Ryan got in touch with the team behind the BBC current events show.

The One Show is eager to shine a light on the heroes keeping us safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and, after speaking to Ryan, decided to spring a welcome surprise on Amanda.

Sitting down on the sofa with her partner and kids for what she thought was going to be a quiz with family over Skype, Amanda was left speechless after presenter Alex Jones and Gethin Jones appeared on the screen.

What followed was a wonderful video montage featuring messages from Amanda’s mum and work colleagues along with a free Domino’s Pizza courtesy of The One Show.

Both Alex and Gethin offered some kind words for Amanda and the incredible work she is continuing to do but it was her mother who brought Amanda to tears with her kind tribute.

Speaking in the clip Muriel Laing recalled how: "She'll do 13 hour shifts on the ward and then come home to her fiancé and the two children and cares for them and still keeps that huge smile on her face, which is the Amanda trademark."

A wonderful tribute to an incredible woman, Amanda is one of the many heroes and heroines keeping Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK safe during the coronavirus pandemic.
