Decision on Warwickshire GAA's new Pairc na hÉireann site delayed

A DECISION on the planning permission for the new grounds at Pairc na hÉireann has been delayed until August.

It was hoped last week that approval would be granted from Solihull Council, based on the plans proposed by Highways England as part of the wider works on the new M42 spur road.

However, it is now expected that a decision on the new pitches and clubhouse at Warwickshire headquarters will be made next month.

On the field, the weekend’s action saw the start of the Intermediate Football Championship where there were wins for Four Masters and St. Josephs.

With seven clubs split into two groups and the top two qualifying for the semi-finals, it was Masters who opened their account in Group A with victory against Sons of Erin on a score line of 3-11 to 2-10.

St. Marys and St. Finbarrs are the other two clubs competing on that side of the draw, while over in Group B it was a winning start for St. Josephs against Rugby Gaels on a score line of 3-18 to 0-04; the league winners Erin go Bragh will take on Derby this Sunday.

This coming Sunday also sees the return of the Senior Football Championship, a win for either Roger Casements or Naomh Padraig in Group B will be good enough to send that team into the semi-finals while defending champions Sean McDermotts take on St. Brendans in Group A.

Up first this Saturday is the culmination of the All-Britain Football Championship, Pairc na hÉireann will play host to the final between Warwickshire and London (throw-in currently scheduled for 2pm).

The winner will end a long wait for provincial honours, both counties not having won this competition for well over a decade. Warwickshire enter the final unbeaten, having already defeated London in the group stages at McGovern Park.

London will travel to Birmingham hoping to emulate their Under-17 panel who defeated Warwickshire 4-03 to 1-05 last weekend at Pairc na hÉireann to win the All-Britain Shield.
