Irish tennis star James McGee on verge of qualifying for Australian Open

IRISH tennis star James McGee is one step away from qualifying for the Australian Open for the first time in his career.

The Dubliner, whose only previous Grand Slam appearance came at the 2014 US Open, beat Radu Albot of Moldova in three sets (1-6, 6-1, 6-2) in the second qualifying round last night.

McGree – a 28-year-old right-hander who is ranked 199th in the world – advances to the third and final qualifying round and will face Daniel Brands (ranked 151st) of Germany in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The winner will progress to the main draw for the tournament in Melbourne, which begins on Monday.
