Tributes paid to GAA star and midwife that passed away aged 35

Tributes have been paid to a midwife and star GAA inter-county player who tragically passed away from her illness aged 35 in the early hours of Monday morning. Eimir Martin, aged 35, battled Leukaemia for a number of years but has now sadly passed away.

A midwife at the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, Eimir Martin was named Queen's University's Student Midwife of the Year in 2020. She was also a former county player with Fermanagh Ladies and Lisnaskea Emmett’s club.

Releasing a statement on Monday after the tragic news, Fermanagh LGFA said they were "heartbroken and saddened" to hear the news about their player.

“We are heartbroken and saddened to hear about the sad passing of Eimir Martin early this morning," said Fermanagh LGFA on Monday.

“Eimir was a past player of our county and her club Lisnaskea Emmetts, and beloved sister of our County referee Aíne.

“While her illness put an untimely end to her playing career, she remained an avid and fervent supporter of all things Gaelic.

“She fought her battle with dignity and courage and didn't let it prevent her from forging a career in midwifery in the SWAH. A role she excelled in.

“We all send our love and prayers to her beloved family; parents Vincent and Geraldine, sister Aíne (John), and brothers Tony (Joanna) and Brian and her darling nephews Oliver and Adam, her heartbroken friends and club.

“Everyone associated with Fermanagh LGFA will keep the Martin family in their thoughts and prayers at this truly sad time. Her courageous battle is finally over. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

Several other tributes have been paid to Eimir Martin. Lisnaskea Emmett’s also offered their condolences.

"The club wishes to offer their sincere condolences to the Martin family on the passing of Eimir. Eimir was one of the greatest footballers our club ever had and an even better human being. Eimir was a midwife in SWAH and will be missed by everyone who knew her. Rest in Peace," they added.

While fellow Derrylin GFC offered a similar message with thoughts and prayers.

"The Derrylin O'Connells are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Eimir Martin R.I.P., daughter of Club President Vincent. After a long tough illness, may Eimir now rest easy. Our thoughts and prayers go to the Martin family at this very difficult time."
