BRITISH pub chain JD Wetherspoon has bought it's second Irish pub after securing a premises in Cork.
Last month, the company purchased its first pub in Ireland with the completion of a €1.5m deal that saw it take control of Tonic Bar in Blackrock, Co Dublin.
The discounted pub operator – with a reputation for cut-price drinks – has now also signed a contract to take control of the former Newport Café site on Paul Street in Cork’s city centre.
The company intends to invest €1.5 million into transforming the site, which is currently closed.
Wetherspoon’s founder and chairman Tim Martin said: “I am delighted that we have secured our first pub in Cork and our second in the Republic of Ireland.
“We are looking at other sites throughout the Republic of Ireland and hopefully they will come to fruition in the near future.”
The new pub is expected to create approximately 40-45 jobs in the city.
It has also been reported that there is a possibility the pub chain could broadcast sport.
Wetherspoon’s plans to open both its Dublin and Cork outlets in April 2014.
