Cork, Ireland's second city, captured on film in 1927

IN the days before television, people flocked to movie theatres to watch the news.

British Pathé was at the forefront of cinema, providing education and entertainment to the masses. Today, it is considered to be the best newsreel archive in the world, with 85,000 historical and culturally significant films.

One of the gems in its catalogue is this three-minute black and white clip, shot in 1927, entitled "The New Cork. A trip through Patrick Street with its many fine buildings."

Also released in 1927 was movie The Jazz Singer, which spelt the end for silent movies and ushered in the age of 'talkies'.
