HBO releases first trailer for upcoming Diana documentary 'The Princess'

HBO HAS released the official trailer for its upcoming documentary about rise and fall of Diana, Princess of Wales.

The film, titled The Princess, comes shortly before the 25th anniversary of the princess’ death in 1997 and will be released on the US streamer on 13 August.

It will explore Diana’s complex relationship with the media and her romance with the Duke of Wales, including their marriage through to their infamous split in 1992.

"A hollow and tormented marriage are giving the British media little else to talk about," a newsreader's voice is heard saying in the trailer.

"I think we’ve got an unhealthy obsession, and I think she’s very close to being a monster," a voice is heard to say in the teaser.

"When you put a modern person in an ancient institution, they will be destroyed," adds another.

The Princess draws solely from contemporaneous archival audio and video footage to take audiences back to key events in Diana’s life as they happened, including her seemingly fairy-tale public courtship and wedding, the birth of her two sons, her bitter divorce, and Diana’s tragic and untimely death on August 31, 1997.

"Princess Diana’s tragic death, caused in part by a high-speed pursuit by paparazzi, was a moment for reflection by both the public and the media machine it feeds. However, after nearly 25 years since Princess Diana’s death, has anything really changed?" HBO said.

"The film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move and the constant judgement of her character.
