Irish takeover at the Brit Awards

IRISH stars descended on London's O2 Arena last night for the 2015 Brit Awards - managing to take home three awards.

Ed Sheeran was a big winner on the night, scooping two of the ceremony's biggest accolades; Best British Solo Male and British Album of the Year.

The third-generation Irishman managed to hold off stiff competition from breakthrough artist Sam Smith, who scooped four Grammy Awards earlier this month.

He took to Twitter to thank his fans and said he was "speechless" over his win.

Sheeran also represented Ireland on stage, when he performed his newest single Bloodstream to a standing ovation.

Elsewhere, Westmeath star Niall Horan and his One Direction bandmates took home the award for British Video of the Year, for their hit single You & I.

Wicklow man Hozier was also on hand to represent the Irish, but lost out on the Best International Male award to Pharrell Williams.

Hozier is fresh from a widely acclaimed Grammys performance with Annie Lennox - where he also received a nomination for Song of the Year.
