Charity leader will run solo marathon this weekend to raise vital funds for the service

THE leader of an Irish charity in London will run a solo marathon this weekend to raise vital funds to support the organisation’s work.

Danny Maher, Chief Executive at Ashford Place in Cricklewood, north London, will take to the streets on Sunday, May 3 to tackle the 26-mile challenge across the borough of Brent.

Mr Maher, whose organisation provides a support network for those struggling with mental health, dementia, loneliness and homelessness, previously completed the London Marathon in 2017 and the Milton Keynes Marathon in 2018.

As Ashford Place continues to provide vital services during the health crisis, Mr Maher hopes his next challenge will help raise the necessary funds to support their work.

Despite coronavirus restrictions on some of their projects, Ashford Place continues to provide clients with benefits advice and guidance and is engaging in telephone befriending with three hundred and thirty people.

They are also providing food parcel services, shop and drops, prescription collection, online arts groups, IT tuition and help liaising with banks and building societies.

The charity's work is being completed by their usual project workers and volunteers as well as a bank of new volunteers, “all of whom are known to us”, they confirm.
