13 further deaths, 402 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Ireland

13 more people, four women and nine men, have died in the Republic of Ireland after contracting coronavirus.

The Department of Health yesterday confirmed that in 24 hours, nine people in the east of the country, one person in the south and three in the west, have sadly passed away from Covid-19.

Ten of those who died are reported as having had underlying health conditions.

Their passing brings the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Ireland to 98, or 134 when combined with the North.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) have reported an additional 402 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of 1pm, 2 April. The figure is almost double that of the 212 which was reported on Monday, 1 April.

There are now 3,849 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland.

148 people have been admitted to Intensive Care Units with critical illness since the coronavirus took hold in Ireland.

Of those 148, 25 have recovered and have since been discharged, but 14 have sadly passed away.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health, said :

"We have a more detailed ICU report available this evening.

"Of 148 cases admitted to ICU, 25 of those cases have been discharged, sadly there have been 14 deaths from ICU and 109 remain in ICU. The median age of ICU admission is 62."

There are currently 4,623 confirmed cases of Covid-19 on the island of Ireland.
