7.9 million smuggled cigarettes seized at Dublin port

REVENUE officers at Dublin port have seized 7.9 million cigarettes which were being smuggled into Ireland.

The seizure was made yesterday when Revenue staff opened a shipping container on a vessel from Rotterdam.

The container was said to contain ‘wielding equipment’ and ‘workshop machinery’.

When the boxes inside the containers were opened, the cigarettes found were ‘cheap whites’ which were branded as “Business Royals” and “Gold Classic”.

Their retail value us estimated to be over €4.3 million, which would have potentially resulted in a potential loss of approximately €3.4m to the Exchequer.

Investigations are ongoing.
