China reports zero deaths from coronavirus for first time

CHINA reported no coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, the very first time the country has done so since it started publishing daily figures back in January.

The National Health Commission said that it had just 32 confirmed cases, down from 39 cases on Monday.

The breakthrough in a total reduction of deaths serves as a glimmer of hope for the rest of the world that the tide can indeed be stemmed.

Coronavirus, which emerged from the Wuhan district of China in December 2019, began sweeping through the country, and until March, China was the epicentre of the virus, with more reported cases and deaths than any other country.

Since then, the likes of Italy, the US and Spain have overtaken China's figures, but with today's reports, perhaps there's finally some light at the end of the tunnel.

Though coronavirus cases and deaths have been consistently on the rise in the west, recent figures suggest that a 'flattening of the curve' might soon be accomplished.

Over the weekend, news emerged that Italy had begun plans to end lockdown, which began back in February, though it would likely still be number of weeks before this is considered.

Despite the supposed good news, China's has recently been subjected to accusations of hiding actual figures and fabricating new ones, underreporting the total cases and deaths from Covid-19.

Since the outbreak, the country has largely been on lockdown, with China's borders all but closed, with only citizens and permanent residents allowed to come in.

On Wednesday, the people of Wuhan will be allowed to leave the city for the first time since January.
