Colin Farrell in talks to play the Penguin in new Batman movie

COLIN FARRELL is in talks to play The Penguin opposite Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

Deadline reports that the Irishman is in talks with Warner Bros about playing the iconic DC Comics supervillain in the Caped Crusader reboot.

Paul Dano has already been cast as The Riddler for the film alongside Zoe Kravitz who has bagged the part of Catwoman.

The film would mark The Irishman’s second foray into the world of comic book movies, 16 years on from his last appearance alongside Ben Affleck in Daredevil.

Based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name, Daredevil saw Farrell play Bullseye, an assassin famed for his deadly accuracy.

Despite turning a profit of more than $100 million at the box office, the film wasn’t well received by critics and failed to spawn a direct sequel.

It was a film notable for Farrell’s over-the-top performance – something the Irish actor made no bones about during press for the film.

Once asked if he ever felt like you were in danger of going over the top? Farrell replied “absolutely”.

“I thought I was doing it every day and I saw the film and I'm like, ‘Oh my God, I'm ridiculous.’

“But you do the work and you do the best you can and try and hope that somebody will think it's OK.”

The Penguin is distinguished by his short stature, weight, way of walking and beak-like nose in the comics.

All of which stands in stark contract to Farrell and could require the Irishman to undergo a significant transformation.

Danny Devito spent three hours in make-up every day when he took up the role in Tim Burton's Batman Returns.

Farrell isn’t the only big name being lined up for The Batman, with Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis also linked with playing the role of dutiful butler Alfred.
