Cork primary school teacher crowned Miss Ireland 2018

A 23-year-old primary school teacher from Cork has been crowned Miss Ireland 2018 at a ceremony in Dublin.

At The Helix in Dublin last night, Aoife O’Sullivan was chosen by a panel of judges, which included popular blogger Suzanne Jackson and former Miss World Rosanna Davison, out of a group of 32 finalists.

Over 450 guests were in attendance for what was the 71st Miss Ireland pageant as all models took to the stage to model key looks, before a select few were picked for an on stage interview where they were asked anything from their views on Donald Trump to what they thought of the Pope’s visit.

Aoife, who teaches the senior infant class at St Maries of the Isle in Cork city, said she was “overwhelmed and “a little shocked” to have won the top prize.

“This has been the most amazing journey for me and I can’t wait to go on to represent Ireland in Miss World,” she said.

“I want to thank Brendan Marc Scully and the amazing sponsors for making this happen.”

Aoife entered Miss Cork three years ago and came third despite describing herself as a “quite, naïve country girl who was thrown into the midst of it all".

She will now go on to represent Ireland in the Miss World finals in China in December.

Mr Ireland was also crowned at last night’s ceremony in the capital, with Galway man Karl Walsh deemed a worthy winner.

This year’s competition differed from previous ones in that charity work was made compulsory for all contestants.

Aoife O’Sullivan’s chosen charity to support was Jigsaw in Cork which supports mental health for young people.
