DCU student facing deportation granted stay until 2019

Shepherd Machaya has been granted stay until February 2019.

The Management of Information Technology and Information Systems student Shepherd Machaya was in danger of being deported to Zimbabwe.

DCU Students’ Union have united in urging Minister Charlie Flanagan to revoke Shepherd Machaya’s deportation order.

Shepherd, having lived in Ireland for nine years, is a second year and was accepted into DCU as part of the University of Sanctuary scholarship scheme.

Despite Machaya's challenging living circumstances in Direct Provision, he has overcome great odds to advance academically.

He completed a Level 5 course in Software Development in Portlaoise College in 2017 and passed his first year in DCU with flying colours and dreaming of a career in systems analysis.

Should he be deported, he will be faced with the threat of torture from local ‘political’ groups, the very people who drove him out of the country nine years ago.
