Derry Girls creator working on a movie version of hit Irish comedy

DERRY GIRLS creator Lisa McGee has confirmed that initial work has begun on a potential film version of the hit Irish sitcom.

Speaking to Red Carpet News, McGee revealed discussions over a big screen outing for Erin, James, Clare, Orla and Michelle are underway.

"That's definitely something we're talking about and something I'd like to explore,” she said.

“It's just if the story is right. So, it's about me figuring all that out at some point!"

In the meantime, the Irish writer has offered fans a glimpse of what to expect from the third series of the show, which is due to return in 2020.

According to McGee, the next season will see the main characters beginning to “grow up a little bit”.

"There's definitely a very personal journey that they go on, as well as a political one,” she said.

“It's an exciting time for them as they're just on the cusp of adulthood.”

She also hinted at a raft of new characters and familiar special guest stars.

"There's lots of new guest characters, as always. In every episode, we have a new big guest star come in,” McGee said.

"That's really exciting, writing those. That has been good craic, looking forward to shooting all of that."

The first series of Derry Girls was broadcast in early January 2018, with the second series arriving in March of last year.

McGee has yet to confirm an official return date for the third series.
