Trump claims US's Covid-19 mortality rate is 'lowest in the world' when challenged on record infection figures

DONALD TRUMP has insisted that America has one of the lowest coronavirus mortality rates in the world after being pressed on the subject of record infection rates in the US.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump disputed the idea the deaths rate from Covid-19 in America was high, insisting: "I think we have one of the lowest mortality rates in the world. Well we're going to take a look."

He added: "Can somebody please get me the mortality rate? I heard we have one of the lowest, maybe the lowest mortality rate anywhere in the world."

Currently, the US has nearly double the number of new cases of Covid compared to any other country in the world.

According to the New York Times, there have been over 3.7 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the States, and 140, 733 confirmed deaths.

Trump has argued for a long time that America's high infection rate is down to the fact that the country has conducted more tests than any other nation.

Despite this stance, he's been criticised for failing to promote the wearing of face masks and allowing his fans to be encouraged to think the virus was being blown out of proportion.

The President was seen wearing a face mask in public for the very first time last week while visiting a military hospital, but he reiterated over the weekend that he felt as though masks should not be a mandatory requirement.

"I want people to have a certain freedom and I don't believe in that no," he told Fox News.

"I don't agree with the statement that if everybody wears a mask everything will disappears.

"Everybody is saying don't wear a mask and now all of a sudden they are saying wear one."
