Eight dogs found in ‘distressed state’ rescued from squalid conditions in Cork

EIGHT DOGS have been rescued by the ISPCA from horrific living conditions in Mallow, Co. Cork.

Canines between the ages of five and ten were found in a "distressed state" living in a dilapidated pen.

The dogs, which were identified as three Shih Tzus and five Bichons by breed, were found to be suffering from a variety of health conditions as a direct result of their care.

Overgrown nails, badly matted coats, dental issues and other health concerns were identified.

They were also found to be suffering from several skin conditions and, worse still, parasites.

In several instances, the conditions of the dogs were deemed so severe, the canines had to be sedated before they could undergo treatment.

The dogs, named Dee, Nicky, Rory, Ruby, Sophie, Penelope and Shelly have been taken into the care of the ISPCA where they are being nurtured back to full health.

All eight of the canines have now been vaccinated and microchipped.

The plan is to have all eight neutered before they are re-homed.

ISPCA Senior Inspector Lisa O’Donovan said: “The dogs were discovered in a distressed state living in a dilapidated pen which could only be described as a squalor.

“It was really heart-breaking to see such lovely dogs living in such appalling conditions and the suffering they would have endured was just unimaginable."

“They now have the promise of a secure loving home ahead of them’, Ms O’Donovan added.

"We would appeal to the public to be vigilant about the care of animals in their neighbouring areas.

"Don’t hesitate to make that call if you suspect an animal could be suffering”.

The dogs are currently in ISPCA care while investigations continue.

Anyone wishing to re-home one of the dogs is invited to apply via the ISPCA website.

Members of the public should continue to report animal welfare concerns to the ISPCA by contacting the National Animal Cruelty Helpline on 1890 515 515 or report cruelty via our online animal cruelty complaint form here.
