Eight-year-old boy dies after being struck by car in Derry

AN eight-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car in Maghera, Co. Derry last night.

The incident occurred around 8pm yesterday evening near the entrance of a service station on the Glenshane Road in Maghera.

Two ambulances and a doctor were sent to the scene but the young boy died as a result of the incident.

Police in Derry are investigating the circumstances of the collision and have said they would like to receive the assistance of witnesses or anyone who may have captured “dashcam footage” of the tragic incident.

The accident comes a day after Gardai recorded 256 drivers speeding on Irish roads on European Day Without a Road Death.

Sinn Fein councillor Brian McGuigan told the Belfast Telegraph: ““The entire community here will be waking up to horrible news which will leave them completely devastated.

“All we can do is come together and offer our support to a grieving family.”
