Former British soldier arrested over Bloody Sunday shootings

POLICE in the North of Ireland have arrested a man in connection with the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings.

Officers from the PSNI's Legacy Investigation Branch detained the 66-year-old man in Co. Antrim this morning.

It has been widely reported that the suspect is a former soldier with the British army.

Thirteen people were killed when British soldiers opened fire on a civilian march in Derry City on January 30, 1972.

A fourteenth person later died from their injuries on Bloody Sunday.

British Prime Minister David Cameron apologised in 2010 for Bloody Sunday, calling the deaths "unjustified and unjustifiable".

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Harrison, who is leading the investigation, said today’s arrest "marked a new phase in the overall investigation which would continue for some time".

The Legacy Investigation Branch was established to investigate Troubles-related murders from the 1960s onwards.

The suspect is being detained at a Belfast police station, where he will be interviewed.
