Funeral for GAA man in Qatar tragedy takes place tomorrow

THE FUNERAL of tragic GAA player Eamonn Morgan, who was killed in a sand buggy accident in Qatar, will take place in Co. Down tomorrow.

The 24-year-old PE teacher, who hailed from Mayobridge in Newry, had been living and working in the Middle Eastern country for the past year when the tragedy struck while enjoying a day out with friends on Saturday, June 27.

His girlfriend, Manchester native Charlotte Sant, was also killed in the accident.

The pair were both working as PE teachers and were popular members of the Qatar GAA team, based in Doha.

Eamonn, whose body was due to be repatriated to Ireland today, will be laid to rest tomorrow afternoon (July 7).

A funeral mass will take place at 1pm in the Church of St. Brigid in Newry before he is interred at the nearby Monks Hill Cemetery.

Funeral plans for Charlotte Sant have yet to be announced.

Regarding their loss, the Morgan family have said: “Eamonn will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his mother, father, brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and entire family circle and his many friends.”

Eamonn leaves behind parents Maura and Kevin, brothers Kevin and Declan and grandparents Lou and Olwyn Morgan.

Prior to leaving for Qatar in 2014, Eamonn had played for the Cú Chulainn’s GAA club in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

This evening (July 6) the club will host a fundraising memorial event in his name at the Tyneside Irish Centre.
