GAA tribute for Fr John Aherne as he retires after 32 years in Manchester

MANCHESTER parishioners wished Fr John Aherne a fond farewell as he retired from his position at St Mary’s Church in Levenshulme.

After 32 years serving the city he thanked his flock for their support and “friendship along the way”.

A special retirement celebration was held at the parish hall earlier this month.

But before he retired fully he made one last stop in the city at a meeting of the Lancashire GAA board this week.

There Secretary Fergal Kiernan and Chairman Sean Hopkins made a special presentation on behalf of the County Board to the priest, for his “dedicated service to Lancashire GAA over the years”.

Fr Aherne also paid a visit to Ireland this month – where he said mass for the Kerry senior football team on the Sunday morning of the All-Ireland Football Final.
