Ice cream van driven into doors of Irish church after high-speed chase with Gardaí

A MAN has been arrested after he drove an ice cream van into a church in County Kerry.

The vehicle was driven into the doors of St John's Church in Tralee at around 9pm last night.

The van driver in question was on the run from Gardaí after being ordered to pull over for driving dangerously.

He did not pull in when instructed by officers to slow down and instead sped through the town followed by Garda patrol cars in a high-speed chase.

The ice cream van then smashed through the bolted steel gates of the church yard before colliding with the building's three-inch, double bolted wooden front doors.

It's understood that the arrested man suffered only minor injuries in the incident.

Speaking to the Journal, local councillor for Tralee, Sam Locke, said: "I understand a lot of damage was done to the church and it’ll cause a good amount of money to fix it.

"But the main thing is nobody was injured in the incident."
