Irish man arrested after biting garda member

A MAN has been arrested after allegedly biting a garda member.

The incident occurred in Waterford city at around 4.30pm on Wednesday.

The garda was taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment, though it's believed that the injury isn't serious.

Officers were dealing with an incident on the Quay when a garda member was reportedly chomped on the hand.

"Gardai on patrol in the Quay area of Waterford observed a male, aged in his 20s, become aggressive towards gardai. The incident occurred at approximately 4.30 today, July 8, 2020," a gardai spokesperson said.

"During the course of the arrest, a garda member was assaulted and received a serious but non-life threatening injury.

"The man was arrested and taken to Waterford Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"He has since been charged in relation to this matter and is due to appear before Waterford District Court tomorrow."
