Irish mum reunited with stolen locket containing lock of late son’s hair after 10 years

A MOTHER has been reunited with a locket containing a lock of her late infant son’s hair, after it was stolen 10 years ago.

Police launched an appeal to find the owner after retrieving the locket from a man they were carrying out a bail check on.

The locket was among items stolen during a burglary at the woman’s home in Limavady, Co. Derry in 2009.

It contained a lock of hair belonging to her son, who died as a baby more than 30 years ago, reports the BBC.

She told the broadcaster she prayed every year on her son’s birthday for the return of the locket and described its return as ‘a miracle’.

Appeal

On January 17, police from Newry and Mourne district launched a social media appeal to find the owner of suspected stolen jewellery.

It was discovered inside a gardening glove dropped by a man who fled when a local policing team went to carry out a bail check on him.

This week officers revealed they had managed to trace the owner and reunited her with the priceless locket and three other pieces of jewellery.

“A locket contained a lock of hair from her son who passed away some years ago,” they said. “She was delighted to get it back.”

The woman’s daughter recognised the pieces and contacted the PSNI, reports the BBC.

“It’s unbelievable what that tiny lock of hair inside means to me. I cannot believe it’s been found,” she told the broadcaster.
