London Mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone is backing the Irish Post's campaign to save RTE’s bureau in Britain, describing the service as 'vital.'
The campaign follows calls from prominent members of the Irish community and readers to retain a service which is scheduled to be dropped following this summer’s Olympics.

This morning (Thursday 19th) Mr Livingstone said:"I'm backing the campaign to save RTE's London bureau. It provides a vital service that I know is valued by many Irish people in London and Ireland alike."
In a letter to Noel Curran, Director General of RTE, Irish Post Chief Executive Niamh Kelly offered to help retain the service, which included the availability of office space at The Irish Post’s Central London base.
The letter read: “After experiencing first-hand the closure of The Irish Post and the effect it had, not only for staff, but for the Irish community in Britain and Ireland, I would like to offer RTE office space in our Smithfield Central London office.”
The letter added:
“I firmly believe that RTE should maintain representation in London and will do everything in my power to assist with this.”
