Malin Head drowning victim to be laid to rest today

ONE of the victims of the tragic drowning off the coast of Donegal earlier this week will be laid to rest today.

A man and his teenage nephew lost their lives when the fishing boat they were in capsized close to Malin Head on Wednesday.

Gerry Doherty, who was in his 60's, will be laid to rest following funeral mass today at St Mary's Church, Lagg, Malin.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

His nephew, 16-year-old Thomas Weir, is originally from Scotland and his body will be returned home to be buried there.

Among those at the funeral will be 40-year-old Dessie Keenan, who survived the tragedy after clinging to a fishing buoy for several hours before being rescued.

Yesterday it emerged that Mr Doherty's father lost his life at the same spot almost four decades ago.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Paddy Doherty was drowned off Malin Head 39 years ago when a rogue wave washed him off a rock and his remains were missing for close on two months.

He was eventually found off the Isle of Skye.
