A MAN has died and two women have been hospitalised following an early-morning assault in Dublin on Saturday.
The man, aged in his 50s, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident in Foster Terrace, Ballybough, Dublin 3.
Gardaí say both women sustained non-life-threatening injuries, although one of the women's injuries were described as serious.
Ray McAdam, Lord Mayor of Dublin and a councillor for North Inner City, said the community was in shock at the news.
Incident
Gardaí said they responded to reports of an assault in the area shortly before 1.30am on Saturday.
A man in his 50s was discovered with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
Two women in their 60s were taken to hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injures, with one of the women's injuries described as serious.
"The scene on Foster Terrace and a nearby domestic residence have been preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau," read a statement from gardaí.
"The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.
"A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Mountjoy Garda Station.
"No arrests have been made at this time.
"Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has any information in relation to this incident, to come forward."
Community in shock
In a statement, Fine Gael councillor McAdam said he was 'deeply saddened to learn of the death of a man in his 50s following an assault in Dublin'.
"My thoughts are with those injured and with the family and loved ones of the deceased at this extremely difficult time," he added.
"The community in Ballybough is in shock and I would appeal to anyone who may have information to contact An Garda Síochána to assist with their ongoing investigation."
Fellow North Inner City councillor Janice Boylan of Sinn Féin commented: "I'm so saddened to hear of the fatal incident that happened in Foster Terrace in the early hours of the morning.
"I am encouraging anyone with any helpful information to contact the local garda station.
"My thoughts and prayers are directed to those affected by this incident."
Gardaí have appealed to anyone with camera footage from the area between 1am and 1.30am on Saturday to contact them.
