A VEGETABLE-LOVING musician has become an internet hit after performing a unique cover of Toto’s iconic hit Africa using a butternut squash and two sweet potatoes.
Toni Patanen has already made a name for himself on YouTube as a man with very special gift for carving egg-shaped ocarina wind instruments.
The Finnish musician is so good at making ocarinas from hand, in fact, he’s even been able to turn a few common garden vegetables into them.
Vegetables like common garden potatoes, butternut squashes and butternut squashes are all perfect for carving to create an easy-to-play instrument.
Patanen’s craftmanship is plain to see in the video for his cover of Africa, Toto’s cult hit which has enjoyed something of a second life thanks to the internet.
In the accompanying clip, he can be seen carefully crafting the necessary ocarinas for his performance, taking time to get all the holes in the right place for the perfect sound.
His hard work pays off, with Patanen succeeding in making sweet potato music with a sublimely surreal rendition of Africa.
It’s not the first time the Finn has put his carving skills and love of vegetables to good use in the world of music.
He previously pulled off a cover of Darude’s early 2000s dance classic Sandstorm using only a potato.
