Police in Derry treating assault of woman in her 60s as 'sectarian hate crime'

POLICE in Derry are treating the assault of a woman aged in her 60s as a sectarian hate crime.

The woman was spat on and hit in the face during the assault, which was carried out by two males.

The incident occurred on Society Street in the city at around 1am on Sunday, October 22.

"This was a disgusting and nasty assault, which caused great upset and distress to the victim," said Inspector Farren of the PSNI.

"This is being treated as a sectarian hate crime, and our enquiries into this despicable assault are ongoing."

Inspector Farren added: "All hate crime is wrong. It is unacceptable.

“We all have a responsibility, individually and collectively, to work to challenge and eradicate hate in our society.

"There is no place for hate and we take reports of this nature incredibly seriously."

Investigators have appealed to anyone who was in the area and saw what happened, or who has information, to get in touch.

They have also asked anyone with CCTV/doorbell cameras or dashcams to check their footage.

Anyone with information that can assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 129 of October 22.
