Tragedy as 'well-liked' pensioner killed by 'freshly-calved cow' on west of Ireland farm

A MAN has been killed in a "tragic accident" involving a cow on a farm in Co. Galway.

Martin Gilmore, a widower aged in his late 60s, was pronounced dead at a farm in Moylough, Ballinasloe at around 2.40pm yesterday.

He was tending to cattle when he was fatally injured by a "freshly-calved cow", An Garda Siochana has confirmed.

The farmer's body was removed to University Hospital Galway.

A post-mortem examination is set to be carried out this afternoon.

The Health & Safety Authroity (HSA) has said it is investigating the cause of the accident.

Ballinasloe area councillor Michael Connolly was among the first to pay tribute to Mr Gilmore today.

"Martin was a hard-working man and very well-liked in the village," said Mr Connolly.

Mr Gilmore's death represents the fifth farming fatality recorded in Ireland this year.

In 2017, 24 farmers died in work-related accidents out of a total of 47 workplace fatalities – with 14 being aged 65 or older.
