Tributes as Absolutely Fabulous actress June Whitfield passes away aged 93

TRIBUTES have been paid to actress June Whitfield, who has died at the age of 93, according to her agent.

The actress, born in London in 1925, starred in the BBC sitcom Terry and June opposite Terry Scott, with whom she worked regularly throughout her career.

She also worked on various Tony Hancock radio and TV shows and starred in several Carry On films.

Whitfield garnered a new generation of fans in the role of Mother in another BBC sitcom, Absolutely fabulous.

Meanwhile her radio work included her portrayal of Miss Marple in 12 BBC Radio 4 adaptations of Agatha Christie novels.

Whitfield had a cameo in an episode of Friends and within the last decade had supporting roles in EastEnders and Coronation Street, as well as popular TV shows Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders and Jonathan Creek.

Stars and fans have paid tribute to the actress, with comedian Rory Bremner describing her as ‘graceful & elegant with a real comic glint in her eye’.
