Woman left fighting for her life after being stabbed in her home in Cork

A WOMAN in Cork has been left fighting for her life after being stabbed multiple times at her home on Friday.

The attack took place in her home near Innishannon in West Cork.

She was found by a relative lying in a pool of her own blood.

The woman, who is said to be in her 50s, suffered several stab wounds, some of which are thought to be life-threatening.

An ambulance was subsequently called to her address.

She was rushed to Cork University Hospital where she has since undergone emergency surgery.

The victim remains in a critical condition.

Her house, which is on the outskirts of Innishannon, has been sealed off while members of the Garda Forensic Unit undergo an investigation.

A man in his 20s has been arrested by Gardai.

He is being held at Bandon Garda Station.

He is said to have been known to the woman.

A knife was reportedly recovered from the scene.

The woman is thought to be a known figure in the local community.

While investigations are ongoing, Gardai have issued an appeal for more information.

A garda spokesperson said: Gardaí are investigating a serious assault on a woman that occurred on the afternoon of Friday, 4th June, 2021, in County Cork.

"A woman was discovered with a number of apparent stab wounds at approximately 2pm at a residence in Innishannon.

"The woman was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she is currently in a critical condition.

"The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination.

"A man in his early 30s has been arrested in connection with this assault. He is currently being detained at Bandon Garda Station.

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in connection with this assault to contact Bandon Garda Station on 023 8852200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
