SHAY Given has revealed that working alongside assistant manager Roy Keane at Aston Villa was an important factor in his international return.
Speaking to The Irish Post at the Bodymoor Heath Training Ground, Given said: “Roy’s seen me every day in training since pre-season when he joined, so I think that’s definitely one of the reasons why I’ve got back into the squad because he’s seen how well I’ve trained.
“I think he’d be in Martin’s ear as well and suggesting getting me in the squad to strengthen the goalkeeping department.”
Dispelling speculation that he had requested a comeback to international football, he added: “Obviously the manager wants you to be involved or you wouldn’t be. It wasn’t down to me, it was down to Martin I think and Roy and Seamus, the goalkeeping coach as well.”
