Leicester could re-hire Martin O’Neill as an interim-manager

Leicester City is reportedly considering hiring former Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill on an interim basis to help them in their battle against relegation.

If the potential hire goes ahead, it will be the second time that the 71-year-old has managed the team. O'Neill took charge of the club in December 1995 and remained at the helm until June 2000.

O'Neill is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in the history of the club. During his time in charge, he won two League Cups, guided Leicester City to a UEFA Cup quarter-final, and finished 8th in the Premier League, the club's highest-ever finish at the time.

He left for Celtic in the summer of 2000 and went on to manage a number of other clubs, including Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland national team.

However, his last job in the Premier League was with Sunderland between 2011 and 2013.

Last week, the club sacked Brendan Rodgers after a series of poor results and a defeat to fellow relegation strugglers Crystal Palace.

According to a report by The Independent, the club is considering hiring an experienced caretaker to help them stay in the Premier League, with former manager O'Neill and Rafa Benitez among the names discussed.

The report also says that Graham Potter, who was also linked with the job, turned down the club.

O'Neill has not managed a team since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019.

It is unlikely that anyone will be appointed in time for Saturday's game against Bournemouth.

That game kicks-off at 3pm.
