Match report: Eventful opener in St. Albans

Glen Rovers 2-07

St. Colmcilles 0-07

ST. Colmcilles took on Glen Rovers in a very competitive game to open the Hertfordshire Senior Championship on Sunday.

The game was tight throughout and there was impressive performances on both sides, with some quality fielding on show and equally impressive play off the ball.

Glen Rovers got off to a brighter start and took a two-point lead courtesy of scores from Conor Byrne and Simon Donnelan, and the duo would prove to be Glen Rovers’ danger men.

St. Colmcilles registered three unanswered points to take the lead but this would be the only time they led the match, although they were never out of the game.

Some solid work from Marty Joyce, Donnelan and Byrne led to the latter scoring the game’s first goal soon after.

The second-half continued in same manner as the first as the two teams traded scores, but again the vital moment was Niall O’Reilly’s fisted goal 10 minutes into the second-half.

Fiachra Landers of Glen Rovers then received two quick and debatable yellow cards, seeing him sent off. This could have led to a fight-back, but Colmcilles missed the resulting free and Rovers went down the field and scored a crucial point.

Although the game was generally played in good spirit, the referee brandished two straight reds for a minor altercation late on.
