Mayo's Durcan picks up cruciate injury that rules him out for the year

Mayo has announced today that captain Paddy Durcan has suffered a cruciate ligament injury that will end his season.

The injury was picked up during Mayo's 0-20 to 1-08 victory over Cavan in Castlebar.

The club website said, "Following further medical assessment today, Mayo GAA can confirm that Paddy Durcan has suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

"Paddy Durcan is an admired figure throughout the county. Mayo GAA would like to wish him all the very best in his recovery, in which he will be supported by our medical team."

Kevin McStay, Mayo manager, added, "This is very disappointing news for Paddy and for everyone involved in Mayo GAA.

"He is a valued player who also exhibits outstanding leadership capabilities. We will all support and rally around him in his recovery.

"Paddy will remain our captain and a vital member of our squad, where he will continue to lead and inspire us. We look forward to his return to the playing field."

Mayo now faces rival Roscommon in their next game. McStay is ready for the test ahead.

"There's so much on the line," McStay admitted. "No doubt they'll be teeing us up after what happened at Dr. Hyde Park the last time.

"We have to go into this with a fresh canvas and start our prep almost immediately. It's another crucial two points that are going to be up for offer."

The match takes place at Dr. Hyde Park in Roscommon with a 4:00 pm throw-in on Sunday.

The match is being shown live on RTÉ 2.
