Mcllroy reflects on Masters performance

Rory McIlroy has admitted that he has learned his lessons from his poor Masters display this year.

The World Number 1 was seen as many people's favorite to win the coveted green jacket at Augusta National, failed to deliver on his favoritism by not making the cut for the third day.

The 34-year-old finished the second day with a score of five-over 77, rendering his chances of winning a first major impossible.

This week, McIlroy returns to action at the US PGA Championship in New York.

The Down native reflected on his Masters performance and also went on to say that he had gained valuable lessons from it.

"I was never so sure I was going to have a great week at Augusta, and then that happened,"McIlroy told reporters in a press conference at Oakwood.

"Then, you know, that happens, and it was a great lesson. It was a great lesson for me to not put too much into feelings or vibes. I shot five-under on the back nine on Wednesday afternoon, and I felt great. Everything was in a good spot, but that's golf.

"The game can bring you back down to earth pretty quickly, but I think the best way to deal with that is to not let yourself get to that level of expectation so early.

"That's sort of what I'm trying to do. I'm just trying to take what the golf course gives me, hit good golf shots, and try to have a little more acceptance.

The Irish golfer also went to admit that bigger picture was also more important in the long-term.

"I don't need to be so myopic in my view of everything, just sort of see the bigger picture a bit more. That's what I'm trying to do," he added

"When I think back to Augusta and the past few months, my level of acceptance wasn't where it needed to be. If I work on that, I know I'll play some good golf again.

"I don't need to be so myopic in my view of everything, just sort of see the bigger picture a bit more. That's what I'm trying to do."

The US PGA Championship runs from 18-21 May.
