Olympic gold medallist Rhys McClenaghan to headline Dublin festival

OLYMPIC champion Rhys McClenaghan will be in Dublin this weekend to headline a festival dedicated to health and wellbeing.

The Co. Down native, who took gold for Ireland on the pommel horse in Paris last year, will be the main attraction at Swellfest in Mountjoy Square Park this weekend.

The athlete, who won Ireland’s Dancing with the Stars earlier this year, with his dance partner Laura Nolan, will deliver a special guest appearance and lead a gymnastics masterclass at the free event, which is organised by Dublin City Council.

In a statement, the Council confirmed McClenaghan’s appearance, which they described as “a unique opportunity for attendees to witness one of Ireland’s foremost athletes in action and gain inspiration from his remarkable achievements”.

The event will be hosted by comedian Enya Martin and Talk Sport’s Luke Delany, who will guide the crowds through a full schedule of sports demonstrations, wellness activities and family-friendly entertainment.

“Swellfest offers an inclusive and vibrant environment for people of all ages to participate in and celebrate health, fitness, and community spirit,” the organisers explain.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam said the event is “a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, embrace a healthy and active lifestyle, and discover new passions”.

He added: “I am thrilled to officially welcome all Dubliners and visitors to join us for what promises to be an exciting and memorable day for the whole family."

The annual event is delivered by Dublin City Council and the North East Inner City Initiative (NEIC).

"Swellfest is a powerful showcase of the incredible community spirit and sporting talent we have right here in the North East Inner City,” Independent NEIC Chair Jim Gavin said.

“The NEIC is proud to fund and support a vast array of local sports clubs that do phenomenal work year-round,” he added.

“I am particularly looking forward to seeing the many excellent clubs supported by the NEIC display the remarkable skill and dedication of their members and coaches.

“This event is a true celebration of their hard work and the positive impact they have on our community."
