On the spot with... Stephanie Roche

Ireland striker Stephanie Roche will find out today if she's won FIFA’s Puskas Award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich. If she wins the award for her fantastic volley for former club Peamount United, ahead of James Rodriguez and Robin van Persie, she'll become the first woman to do so.

She had a quick chat to The Irish Post about soccer and that stunning goal...

In three words, how would you describe your life since the video of your goal went viral?

Hectic, Exciting, Surreal.

How many times have you watched the video of your goal? Be honest…

Not as many times as you'd think!

If you win the Goal of the Year award today, how would you celebrate?

There won't be much celebrating as I'm heading straight to an Ireland training camp for a winter friendly! I love playing for my country so it will be great to see all my team mates and even better if I've the Puskas trophy with me!

It’s going to be tough for you to top your goal, don’t you think?

I'm always practicing my technique and trying to improve, so never say never!

cristiano-ronaldo-n Cristiano Ronaldo is one of Stephanie Roche's biggest inspirations

Do you remember the first time you ever kicked a football?

I've been playing football since I was very young.  I was always out on the road playing with the boys.

Who’s your biggest inspiration?

I think Ronaldo is a great player, he has such power, skill and technique.

How do you feel about becoming a role model to young girls looking to become successful sports women?

I think it's great and it's an honour. I had a little girl draw me a picture of me scoring the goal and I was really touched.

If you weren’t playing soccer, what career would you have chosen?

It's always been about football - I've only ever wanted to work in football.

What’s next for you?

I just want to keep playing professional football for as long as I can, oh and hopefully win the Puskas award!
