Sean Treacys triumph in Collins Cup

COLLINS CUP FINAL

SEAN TREACYS 3-14

ROBERT EMMETTS 2-13

A STRONG finish to the first-half helped Sean Treacys to clinch the Collins Cup at Robert Emmetts’ expense at Ruislip on Sunday.

The teams were evenly-matched for most of the opening period, but Sean Treacys hit five unanswered points during a five-minute spell before the break which proved to be decisive.

There was no shortage of scores early on as Treacys led by 0-5 to 0-4 with just 10 minutes played, with three of Emmetts’ early tally coming from the excellent Shane Ryan, while James Palmer, who was in fine scoring form for Treacys, hit two of his overall total of four.

Maurice Callanan then brought them level after being picked out by Kevin Bolger’s short free, and they moved into the lead in the 12th minute courtesy of a superb goal from Brian Smyth, who was played in by Ryan.

Now three points behind, Treacys were three in front just two minutes later. Simon Keane hit back immediately with their first goal, before Diarmuid Skehan added another a minute later to give the Mitcham side a 2-5 to 1-5 advantage at the midway point of the first-half. It was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Emmetts responded well with points from Callanan and Smyth to reduce the gap to one, but Treacys moved up a gear to pull ahead approaching the interval.

Brian McCormack hit three points, while Enda Phelan and Dave Maher were also on target to give Treacys a six-point half-time lead, a gap that ultimately proved to be too wide for Emmetts to bridge.

Points from Callanan and Smyth gave them a positive start to the second-half, but Treacys kept Emmetts at a safe distance throughout the second-half.

Skehan goaled again to put Treacys 3-13 to 1-11 ahead with 15 minutes remaining. Despite good efforts from Smyth and Mark Traynor, Emmetts couldn’t find the goal they needed until added-time when Traynor found the net, but it was much too little, too late.
