The Irish Times wins name battle against Britain's Times Newspapers

TIMES Newspapers Ltd has agreed not to use the name The Times Ireland for its new online newspaper following legal objections from the publishers of The Irish Times.

The Irish Times had been granted permission by Mr Justice Paul Gilligan in the British High Court to inform Times Newspapers Ltd of its intention to apply for court orders preventing the British newspaper from using the name.

The publishers of The Irish Times claimed the title The Times Ireland infringed its trademark and copyright.

In the wake of the court proceedings, Times Newspapers Ltd have now agreed not to use the title or the domain name timesireland.ie or any logo on twitter confusingly similar to The Irish Times logo.

Subsequently, another High Court judge, Justice Raymond Fulham was told by both sides he could strike out the case, agreement having been reached.

The new Irish publication is a digital edition of The Times due to be part of a seven-day subscription package with The Sunday Times.
