Imelda May announces marriage split on Facebook

Dublin singer Imelda May has announced her split from husband Darrel Highham her Facebook page. May married Highham, also her band guitarist in 2002, giving birth to their first child, Violet in August 2012. The singer posted the news as a status update on, July 17 stating:

My husband Darrel and I have split up. As you can imagine we are very sad but happy we're making the right decision for us and our daughter who is doing really well by the way.

The normally private songwriter admitted to publicising the split, in order to avoid rumours. The singer has been inundated with messages of support on her Facebook page since the announcement which continued:

No matter what you hear and read my husband and I have the deepest love and respect for each other and are doing well. We are lucky to both have such amazing family and friends. As you know I hate to air my laundry in public and never do but thought I should put something on here to dispel any bad rumours.

The 41 year old rockabilly signer was born in the Liberties area of Dublin and started her career as a singer aged just 16, touring the Dublin pub circuit. In 2007 her album Love Tattoo reached number 1 in Ireland and garnered her worldwide attention. It is reported that following the split Higham will also be leaving the band.
