BOY racers in a picturesque Kerry town have been told to ditch their wayward ways and pitch in to help the community.
In a bid to crack down on dangerous driving in the area, Killarney Mayor Cllr Paddy Courtney has asked the manic motorists to give up their noisy exhausts and loud car radios to help isolated people living in rural areas by bringing them to bingo or the pub.
“If they want to be driving these cars, drive properly and mannerly and maybe adopt a friend,” he said. “Take the neighbour to bingo or down to the pub for two pints and take them home.
"Maybe that is something that can come out of this, something good. Maybe these boy racers and boy racer girls as they are called, maybe they can look at this and say this is an opportunity to show they can do some good.”
Speaking on Radio Kerry, the Mayor also called on the parents of these teenagers to help to tackle the problem.
While another Killarney resident added: “Locals are very upset. This is a beautiful area and people are coming out and doing this. They need to be stopped either by the guards or by us — the neighbours.”
