Batman fans given first glimpse of Colin Farrell as the Penguin

COMIC BOOK movie fans have been given a glimpse of Colin Farrell as The Penguin ahead of his appearance as the DC villain in The Batman.

The 43-year-old Castleknock native was cast as the umbrella-wielding, Oswald Cobblepot several months back, taking over the role made famous by Danny Devito in Tim Burton’s divisive Batman Returns.

Known for his short-stature and round physique, few fans if any would have had the Irishman in mind for the role of The Penguin prior to his casting.

However, if the first images of Farrell are anything to go by, he could prove to be an inspired choice for one of the most hotly-anticipated superhero movies of recent times.

The Batman will mark Robert Pattinson’s debut as the Caped Crusader, following Ben Affleck’s decision to step back from the role to concentrate on other projects.

Ben will nevertheless be well-represented on the new film with his younger sibling, Casey Affleck, set to play another iconic villain in the form of Edward Nigma aka The Riddler.

Elsewhere Zoe Kravitz has been cast as The Catwoman, Selina Kyle, with production already underway.

Though details remain scarce, several images leaked from the set offer a glimpse of what fans can expect from Farrell’s Penguin.

They feature the Dubliner, dressed under what appears to be an extensive layer of padding, sporting a distinctive beard and hairstyle combo as well as the character’s trademark umbrella.

Some imagination may still be required from anyone attempting to picture the actor as The Penguin, of course, while it remains to be seen as to whether any computer-generated effects will be applied to enhance his look.

The film will see Farrell join a select group of actors to have appeared in movies based on characters from the pages of DC and Marvel comics.

He previously played the part of Bullseye in 2003’s ill-fated Daredevil movie alongside Ben Affleck as the titular hero.
