Conor McGregor slams Irish government over new Covid-19 restrictions

CONOR MCGREGOR has accused the Irish government of taking an uneven approach to tackling coronavirus in Ireland.

The UFC star made the comments in the wake of new Covid-19 restrictions which were rolled out following an uptick in cases across the country.

Under the new guidelines, sporting events must be held behind closed doors, while home visits should be limited to a maximum of six people from up to three households.

Anyone over 70 is also being advised to limit their interactions while anyone who can work from home is under instruction to do so.

Taking to Twitter, the Irishman blasted the updated restrictions for impacting some industries more than others.

McGregor took aim at Micheál Martin’s government for a lack of clear direction on Ireland’s approach to tackling the virus.

"We are in need of clear direction,” he wrote.

“Random industries are singled out, random jobs are impacted. It is time for the same standards for all.”

The comments follow on from McGregor’s previous criticism of the Taoiseach’s decision to keep pubs that do not serve food closed.

Under current government guidelines, only pubs serving a “substantial meal” can open in the Republic with no date yet set for when other pubs can reopen.

McGregor tweeted Martin over the weekend, slamming the approach for showing  lack of trust in the wider public.

"In Ireland, pubs that serve food and drinks can open," he wrote.

"But pubs that just serve drinks can not.

"Food does not make us safer, responsible citizens do."
